During the 2016 presidential race, then-FBI Director James Comey effectively coronated Hillary Clinton, ignoring damning evidence from her email scandal and exonerating her months before an investigation into her crimes were complete. If that weren’t enough, Clinton fed the FBI unverified information supplied by Russian operatives, which investigators later used as a pretense to spy on the Trump campaign.
After the New York Times reported that President Donald Trump once considered investigating this Clinton-FBI collusion, the mainstream media hysterically called it an “abuse of power” and charged that “this is what happens in authoritarian countries.” Speaking on his hit cable news show, Fox News anchor Sean Hannity mocked the media coverage, arguing that these developments hardly represent “breaking news” since “we know how the president feels about Hillary and Comey, and we know Hillary committed crimes.”
Media meltdown
The Times broke the news on Tuesday that Trump once considered asking the Justice Department to investigate Clinton and Comey. The paper called their own story “one of the most blatant examples yet of how Mr. Trump views the typically independent Justice Department as a tool to be wielded against his political enemies.”
That might be true if the pair were innocent, but Clinton and Comey were each responsible for a myriad of criminal and ethical offenses. Hannity explained:
Hillary Clinton’s bought and paid for dirty Russian dossier filled with Russian lies, rampant FISA fraud abuse committed using those bought and paid for Hillary Russian lies, literally fraud committed against judges to get subpoenas to get warrants against a Trump campaign associate Carter Page. And then after that, the coordinated leak efforts to literally lie to the American people, propagandize them, misinform them so that would influence the 2016 election. That all now needs to be investigated if we really care about Russia collusion, and equal justice under the law, and equal application of our laws.
“[Trump] gave Hillary Clinton the nickname ‘crooked Hillary’ for a reason,” Hannity said. “And let’s be honest, she should have been prosecuted, the single, easiest obstruction of justice case, slam-dunk that I’ve ever seen in my life. You know, when you delete subpoenaed emails, acid washed the hard drive, Bleach Bit, hammers devices.”
“And, by the way, Comey’s actions legally need to have been looked into and should be,” he concluded.
Nothingburger to see here
The Times, like the dozens of publications that picked up their nothingburger of a story, downplayed allegations of impropriety by Clinton and Comey. While admitting that the scandal-plagued Clinton Foundation accepted donations from a Russian energy firm just before approving a lucrative deal benefiting the company, the left-leaning newspaper insisted that “no evidence has emerged that those donations influenced the American approval of the deal.”
The report also goes to great lengths to defend Comey for leaking a memo in 2017, arguing that the document was not classified. However, this characterization completely steamrolls over the fact that two other memos leaked at the same time were, in fact, classified.
“Now, during the 2016 campaign, then-candidate Trump repeatedly said that he wanted Hillary Clinton prosecuted for her email servers scandal, and Clinton and Comey both should have been investigated,” Hannity said.
Shock and awe
Despite these repeated calls for an investigation, the anti-Trump media are feigning shock that the president would be interested in following through with this campaign promise. “Now, does that sound like breaking news to you?” Hannity asked. “Because, it isn’t, it shouldn’t, and because we know how the president feels about Hillary and Comey, and we know Hillary committed crimes. It’s not even in dispute,” he said.
But that hasn’t stopped the press from treating the revelation that Trump once considered looking into a long train of offenses by Comey and Clinton like Washington’s biggest secret. “And, of course, the anti-Trump haters over on conspiracy TV MSNBC, and fake news CNN acting like they found it,” Hannity joked. “They’ve been looking for two years and now they found it.”
Hannity’s coverage was interspersed with clips of mainstream reporters reacting to The Times story. Journalist after breathless journalist made salacious and unfounded claims. “Donald Trump is basically running his office like he’s the head of a banana republic,” charged one news anchor. “I think this is a scandal at 15 on a 1 to 10 level,” said another. “This is what happens in authoritarian countries, the president or leader orders the prosecution of his political enemies,” another said.
“He never did anything! Never, ever! It’s a phony story, fake news,” Hannity said.
When President Barack Obama sent spies into the Trump campaign in 2016 to collect dirt on the Republican presidential candidate, or when Trump aides were surreptitiously wiretapped and monitored by Obama officials, the media were dead silent. But when Trump even considered using the law to prosecute documented crimes, the same media has a complete meltdown.
Hannity is right to document and expose the hypocrisy, and as 2020 approaches, it’s only going to get much, much worse.
