Why didn't the FBI interview Christine Blasey Ford? Democrats say Kavanaugh might be the answer

Senate Democrats have a theory about why the White House blocked the FBI from interviewing Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, the central figures in the just-concluded, extremely limited sexual assault investigation. That theory isn’t about Blasey Ford, David Corn reports. It’s about Kavanaugh:

“When you’re in front of the FBI, you cannot refuse to answer questions, you cannot attack the agents, you cannot change the subject,” a Democratic member of the committee says. “The White House did not want Kavanaugh in such a situation. And if he said anything to the FBI that could prove false, he could end up in a lot of trouble.”

Refusing to answer questions, changing the subject, and counter-attacking were how Kavanaugh made it through his Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the subject, so talking to the FBI would have had to involve a massively different set of answers from him. Republicans have been willing to shield Kavanaugh from a lot, and forgive him much more, but explaining away lies to the FBI would have been awkward at a minimum.

No wonder Donald Trump has gotten so invested in Kavanaugh: he’s another guy who’s accumulated multiple sexual assault allegations and habitually lies to get out of trouble or get his own way. But this is who Republicans are going to the mat to put into a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court—someone they have to protect from an FBI interview because his lies and aggression might finally get him into trouble.
