Solid majority of Americans favor FBI investigation into Kavanaugh

In the wake of last week's Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, a solid majority of Americans favors further FBI investigation into the sexual assault claims against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, with 56 percent supporting further inquiry and just 32 percent opposing it.

The results are part of an online survey of 2,139 adults conducted entirely after the testimony of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Judge Kavanaugh, Sept. 29-30, by Civiqs on behalf of Daily Kos Media.

Overall, Kavanaugh is underwater in the poll, with 50 percent opposed to his confirmation, 44 percent in support of it, and 6 percent not declaring either way.

While the partisan divide over Kavanaugh is roughly even (90 percent of Democrats opposing confirmation versus 88 percent of Republicans supporting), the gender gap holds, with a 9-point difference between women and men in opposition to Kavanaugh (54 percent of women opposed vs. 45 percent of men opposed).

By a 12-point gap, respondents also said they would be less likely to re-elect a senator who voted to confirm Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court—49 percent said they would be less likely to vote for a senator who supported Kavanaugh's confirmation, and just 37 percent said they would be more likely to do so. The gender gap was also evident here, with a wide margin of women saying they would be less likely to support a Kavanaugh-confirming senator, 53-34 percent, and men saying they would be less likely to do so by 45-39 percent.

Survey respondents also found Dr. Blasey Ford to be more credible than Kavanaugh overall. They said Dr. Blasey Ford was credible, 51-40 precent, with 9 percent unsure. (The gender gap was wide here, with women finding her credible 55-36 percent, and men more closely divided, 48-44 percent.)

But respondents were split on Kavanaugh's credibility: 45 percent credible versus 46 percent not credible, with 8 percent unsure. (Women did not find Kavanaugh credible 41-51 percent, while men did find him credible 50-42 percent.)

"The gender gap in opposition to Brett Kavanaugh is striking,” said Drew Linzer, Civiqs director and chief scientist. “Women were much less likely than men to find Brett Kavanaugh's denials credible. A clear majority of women believe that Ford's account is more believable, and overwhelmingly support further FBI investigation of claims against Brett Kavanaugh."
