The Kavanaugh hearing has two 'third rails': calling in the FBI or talking to Mark Judge

In Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s documents, statements, and testimony, there has always been one other person mentioned who was actually in the room and witness to the assault. But Chuck Grassley has repeatedly made it clear that Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee won’t bring in that single witness. And they won’t say why.

As Talking Points Memo reports, Republicans were insistent that Dr. Ford had to appear in person, but when it comes to the third person in the room, they accepted a statement that he wasn’t there and let it go at that. During a break in Thursday’s testimony, reporters approached Republican Senator John Cornyn to ask about Judge, but Cornyn repeatedly ducked questions about Kavanaugh’s childhood friend. He said, “His lawyer said he was filing us a statement which is directly contrary to what Dr. Ford has said. This is not about trying him.

It’s also not about finding the truth, as has been clear throughout the day’s hearing. Judge was not interviewed by the FBI, and he’s not present. Senator Lindsey Graham was even clearer in his disdain for the facts, saying that the burden of proof is not on Kavanaugh, and adding, “I don’t need to hear from Mark Judge.”
