Senate Republicans say they want a fair process on Kavanaugh, but their actions speak louder

Senate Republicans are bragging about their efforts to “depoliticize” the Brett Kavanaugh sexual assault hearing, and “get to the truth.” How committed are they to the “fair process” Kavanaugh insists he wants?

So committed that they’ve already scheduled a vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court for the day after the hearing. Because nothing says “we’re ready to believe these women” than “we’re voting tomorrow.”

So committed that they’re ducking phone calls with lawyers for Deborah Ramirez, Kavanaugh’s second accuser, not calling witnesses like Mark Judge, who Christine Blasey Ford says witnessed/participated in Kavanaugh’s assault of her, and also not calling as witnesses the people Ford told about her experience in recent years.

So committed that the Senate majority leader called the allegations “smears” … before realizing he was supposed to be pretending to be fair and saying that “we ought to take everyone seriously.”

Even a crew as backward as Senate Republicans know that it won’t look good if they outright call these women liars, so they’re sidling right up to that line, very carefully. Like Sen. Roy Blunt, who said “I think the fact that nothing is confirmable is interesting.” (Hey Roy: I think it’s interesting that Republicans have worked to prevent an investigation that could have confirmed something—or anything.)

But sure, this is all about a “fair process” and not just about pushing Trump’s boy through no matter what.

These people cannot remain in power. Please give $3 each to Jacky Rosen in Nevada and Beto O'Rourke in Texas.
