California attorney general Xavier Becerra threatened to arrest Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchins for doing her job by upholding federal immigration laws.
“You are chief law enforcement officer of the county. The attorney general is threatening to arrest you,” Fox News host Tucker Carlson said to Hutchins. “I have never heard of anything like that happening in any state.”
Carlson was outraged that the California attorney general would rather arrest a law enforcement officer doing her job than rid the state of illegal immigrants who are breaking federal law by being in the United States unlawfully.
The brouhaha erupted after the Orange County board voted to join the Trump Administration’s lawsuit against California’s sanctuary state law. Specifically, the sheriff’s department said it will publish a list of inmate release dates, in defiance of California’s sanctuary state law that discourages local law enforcement from helping federal immigration authorities.
California Attorney General Javier Becerra responded by suggesting he will arrest the Orange County sheriff for enforcing longstanding federal immigration laws.
“State law is state law, and it’s my job to enforce state law,” Becerra said at a press conference. “I will do so. And we want to make sure that every jurisdiction, including Orange County, understands what state law requires of the people and the subdivisions of the state of California.”
When asked if he would consider arresting the sheriff of Orange County, Becerra quipped: “I think I just answered that.”
Typically, cooperation between law enforcement agencies in different cities, states, and branches of government is encouraged to solve or prevent crimes. It happens all the time in murder cases, kidnappings, terrorism, etc.
But when it comes to illegal immigration, local police in sanctuary cities are forbidden from helping federal ICE agents because liberals don’t want to stem the tsunami of illegal immigration into the United States. Observers say this is because Democrats want to import illegals into the country to grow their party.
Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchins said Becerra doesn’t seem to understand the law, which she’s required to do in order to protect residents of her county.
“I don’t think he understands what the law says,” she said. “What I’m doing is entirely within the confines of the law, and I’m doing what I think is important for my constituents. It’s a public safety issue to me. It’s not about immigration at all. It’s about individuals who have committed violent crimes.”
Hutchins said it’s ridiculous that Becerra wants the police to look the other way when they come across an illegal immigrant who has committed a violent felony simply because California wants to be a “sanctuary state” for illegal aliens.
“Let me just give you some examples of some individuals we have had to release: How about sex with a minor. Child cruelty. Domestic violence. I don’t think I could sleep at night knowing that I had let somebody go and they go out and commit another crime with those kinds of charges.
So I am doing something well within the law that helps notify ICE, along with the community, when [illegal aliens who commit felonies] are being released. That gives ICE an opportunity to pick up those individuals who are in custody for serious crimes. We are not talking about misdemeanor crimes.”
While liberals think they’re doing a good deed by helping illegals stay unlawfully in the United States, they blithely ignore the fact that many illegal aliens commit crimes. Just ask Kate Steinle’s family.
Kate was strolling on a pier with her dad when she was shot to death in 2015. In a shocking verdict, a San Francisco jury acquitted illegal immigrant Jose Ines Garcia Zarate in the fatal shooting. The jury was not told that Zarate was a 7-time felon when deciding his verdict.
Zarate, who had been deported five times before murdering Steinle, told authorities he specifically returned to San Francisco because it was a sanctuary city.
In 2014, illegal alien Luis Bracamontes shot two Sacramento police officers to death in cold blood. At trial, Bracamontes told the judge his only regret was that he didn’t kill more cops.
“Only thing that I f—en regret is that I f—en killed two,” Bracamontes laughed. “ had killed more of the motherf—ers!”
