Actress Debra Messing shared a photo on Facebook Wednesday featuring her 13-year-old son Roman Zelman and revealed that he’d asked permission to sit down for the playing of the national anthem during a Wednesday night New York Rangers hockey game.
What are the details?
Messing captioned the photo, “‘Please stand for the pledge of allegiance.’ Son: ‘Mom, I want to sit down in protest. Can we do that?’ Me: ‘Yes, honey. We can do that.’”
“Whose [sic] crying? I’m not crying. #BLM,” the actress added.
While the boy sat for the anthem, he did place his hand over his heart.
The photo, at the time of this writing, has received over thousands of likes and amassed several hundred comments.
While many of the top comments lauded Messing and her child-rearing, others were not so receptive to the actress allowing her son to sit for the national anthem.
One commenter wrote, “Debra, and you’re PROUD of that? I’m sickened by your disrespect. I doubt that I’ll ever watch Will and Grace again. You, single-handedly, are destroying your audience.”
Another commenter, however, detailed their own “hard” experience with the national anthem.
“My wife and I sat for the first time for both of our son’s high school basketball and wrestling meets. It was both hard and necessary. Good for your son!” the fan wrote.
Messing has long been an advocate for the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as a staunch supporter of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
