Trump endorses South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott for reelection

Donald Trump endorsed South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott for reelection on Tuesday, The Hill reported.

Scott, a first-term senator, is up for reelection in 2022. With the former president’s endorsement, he should have no problem sailing through to his second and, he says, final term.

“It is my great honor to give Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina my complete and total endorsement,” Trump said in a statement through his Save America PAC.

Scott doing “outstanding job”

“He is both an outstanding senator and person who works tirelessly for the people of his great state, and the USA,” Trump’s statement continued. “Strong on the military, law enforcement, loves our vets, protects our Second Amendment and our borders. Tim will continue to do an OUTSTANDING job for our country!”

The only Black Republican in the Senate, Scott played a key role in drafting criminal justice reform legislation after the death of George Floyd in police custody.

He has sharply criticized Trump on a number of occasions. After the deadly Charlottesville rally in 2017, which gave life to the persistent falsehood that Trump praised white supremacists, Scott said the president’s response compromised his “moral authority.”

Scott also criticized Trump for a “photo-op” at Lafayette Square this June, and in September, as the media falsely accused Trump of having “failed to condemn” white supremacy at his September debate, Scott said Trump “misspoke” with comments he made about the right-wing Proud Boys.

Trump looms over GOP

However, Scott voted to acquit Trump of a second, failed impeachment relating to the January riot at the Capitol.

“The Democrats should put the blame where it stands, where it should be,” he said. “And it does not have to do with the president who said go ‘peacefully’ to protest.”

Trump has made clear that he sees himself as the leader of the GOP, and there is little doubt that he is indeed the party’s dominant figure, making his endorsement as coveted an asset as ever.

This is Trump’s third official endorsement through his Save America PAC since he left the White House.

He previously endorsed former White House aide Max Miller to challenge Ohio Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (R), who was one of 10 House Republicans to impeach Trump, and Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran (R).
