‘Time is of the essence’: House Dems grow restless as Pelosi continues to hold up coronavirus relief

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has for weeks refused to budge on a deal with Republicans for a new round of coronavirus relief. But as Pelosi tries to pass the buck to the GOP, members of her own caucus seem to be growing weary with her hardline approach.

In a report published Tuesday, Politico revealed that numerous House Democrats, including some who are at risk of losing their re-election bids this November, have come out to denounce Pelosi’s strategy and insist that legislators on the Hill get their acts together and pass a package to help Americans weather the ongoing COID-19 pandemic.

“[W]ith less than two months before the election,” Politico reported, moderate Dems are “growing more vocal in their anger by the day.”

Moderate Dems demand action

According to Politico, the apparent break in the caucus became apparent Tuesday during an at-times contentious conference call that featured Speaker Pelosi and other Democrat House leaders. On the call, several moderate Dems stepped up to speak their minds.

One such Democrat was Virginia Rep. Abigail Spanberger, who made clear that she wants to see action from her party’s leadership, even if the GOP isn’t on board with Pelosi’s $2.2 trillion plan. The GOP has put forth packages that are closer to the $1 trillion range.

“My conviction is to actually do my g*****n job and come up with a solution for the American people,” Spanberger said on the call, according to Politico. “We have to bring something to the floor.”

Rep. Max Rose, a Democrat from New York, expressed a similar sentiment — and he wasn’t afraid to point fingers at his own caucus.

“Every member of the leadership team, Democrats and Republicans, have messed up. Everyone is accountable,” he said, according to Politico. “Get something done. Get something done!”

“The pressure is loud”

According to Fox News, Rep. Rose is backing a $1.5 trillion compromise relief bill drafted by the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus. Like many of his Democrat colleagues, Rose told Fox that he’s feeling pressure to get something done on behalf of his constituents. (Pelosi, for her part, doesn’t seem to be feeling the heat.)

“The pressure is loud and forthright and it is bipartisan in nature,” Rose told Fox. “Because that pressure is reflective of where the American people are. They are sick and tired of politics.”

The Democrat congressman went on: “To the leadership, we said this very simple message: It’s time for you to stop playing games. Let’s stop the charade. Let’s stop this stupidity. Let’s put the country first.”

Of course, it remains to be seen whether Pelosi and company will be willing to “put the country first.” After all, that might mean giving a win to President Donald Trump just weeks before November’s election — and “Crazy Nancy” just can’t have that.
