House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) showed her hand on Wednesday, admitting during a press conference that “every crisis” is an “opportunity” to advance the leftist agenda.
Pelosi’s comments were referencing Rep. James Clyburn’s remark (D-SC) made at the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak that the first rescue bill was “a tremendous opportunity to restructure things to fit our vision.”
They’re not hiding it anymore
Pelosi has been attacked by Republican lawmakers for her coronavirus stimulus bill, the HEROES act, a shockingly partisan proposal that would appropriate billions of taxpayer dollars for Democrat priorities.
In defense of the bill, Pelosi said during her Wednesday press briefing that “we have to open the economy, we have to do so in a way that gives more opportunity for access to care, to credit, to opportunity.”
“Just as Mr. Clyburn said, this is an opportunity, every crisis is,” she continued.
Pelosi has attempted to characterize the HEROES act as a “disciplined, focused, necessary” intervention on behalf of the reeling economy and American workers, but the partisan provisions within the bill betray its true purpose.
The bill includes mandatory mail-in voting provisions, direct payments to illegal immigrants, funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and assistance to non-profits and political action groups — Among dozens of other liberal agenda items.
Pelosi doubles down
One of the partisan priorities that the HEROES act aims to accomplish is federalizing elections, sending “postage paid” ballots to “every eligible voter, registered voter.”
During a Tuesday appearance on MSNBC’s “All In,” Pelosi explained that “this is now a health issue. We talk about saving the lives, testing, the livelihood, the economy, and the life of our democracy, vote by mail,” again framing it as an issue of life or death despite a lack of evidence that voting in person is responsible for spreading coronavirus.
She went on to say that the bill asks for $3.6 billion federal dollars to “make sure that the states have the resources they need to ensure that people have the right to vote.”
Donald Trump has come out swinging against vote-by-mail proposals in recent days, earning a Twitter advisory earlier in the week for speaking out against the dangers that the schemes pose to the integrity of our elections.
He warned on Tuesday that “We’re not going to destroy this country by allowing things like that to happen. We’re not destroying our country. This has more to do with fairness and honesty and, really, our country itself.”
