Dem congressman: Republicans would nominate someone other than Pence to replace Trump if removed

Since taking office in 2017, Vice President Mike Pence has served as a loyal member of the Trump administration. Nevertheless, some believe that his position in 2020 isn’t secure.

One of them is Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY), who recently told CNN that if Democrats actually succeeded in removing President Donald Trump, Republicans will nominate someone other than Pence to replace him — perhaps Nikki Haley.

Watch:

“I was saying the political consequences of that might not be very good for Democrats because if we remove him from office, I will guarantee you the Republican Party would not nominate Mike Pence to succeed him,” Yarmuth said.

“They would nominate somebody like Nikki Haley, who would be much more difficult for a Democrat to defeat,” he went on.

“Could be bad politics”

“I don’t think this is about politics and I don’t think we should consider politics, I just think it could be bad politics,” Yarmuth concluded.

The Kentucky Democrat isn’t the first to suggest that Pence could loose out to Haley, with writer Andrew Stein making the case for it in a Wall Street Journal piece this past June.

“It’s too late for Mr. Trump to revamp his political personality. But with the 2016 election in the past, Nikki Haley on the ticket could tamp down the antipathy for Mr. Trump that seems to afflict so many moderate and Republican-leaning women. President Trump needs the prospect of a Vice President Haley to help recapture the White House,” Stein argued.

“But Mike Pence is the person, one hundred percent.”

However, while Trump has praised Haley, he has also dismissed suggestions that he’s planning to replace Pence with her.

“I love Nikki, she endorsed me, she’s my friend, she’s a part of my campaign. But Mike Pence has been a great vice president, one hundred percent,” Trump told Fox Business.

“Let me tell you, Mike Pence has been a great vice president. Nikki Haley represented us so well and our country so well, I love Nikki and there’s places for Nikki, Nikki’s future is great. But Mike Pence is the person, one hundred percent.”

“We won together. We have tremendous evangelical support. We have tremendous support from every angle. You can’t break up a team like that. And we get along well together,” he added.
